Your Guide to Repurposing Content: Step-by-Step Strategy

To the business owner with to-do lists spanning as far as the eye can see, creating content for the abundance of platforms can seem like a daunting task. Keeping up with your blog, sending that weekly email, pinning on Pinterest, and posting on all the socials…the list only goes on.

What if I let you in on a little secret? There is absolutely no reason for you to produce unique pieces of content for all of the places you want to show up.

Of course, this isn’t really a secret at all. You’ve probably heard before that repurposing your content is something you should be doing and I want to share a step-by-step guide on exactly how to do that.

Firstly, let’s take a quick second to chat about why repurposing your content is so important (& why it’s one of my favorite things to nerd-out about).

  1. Doing this will save you so much time, energy, and brain power.
  2. Different people consume content in different ways, so having your message spread across a variety of platforms will expand your reach.
  3. This will also serve to make your content more evergreen so it can reach your audience for months (or even years) to come.

Step 1: Find Your Starting Point

Of course, there is going to have to be an original piece of content that you use as your starting point. The best places to start are going to be your long-form pieces of content. These are larger pieces of content that will give you a more extensive bulk to pull apart and spread out across different platforms. My favorite is a blog post, but you can also utilize things like YouTube videos or podcasts.

Step 2: Break Down Your Content

The next step is going to be deciding on which streams you’re going to utilize for your original content piece. You’ll want to use your best judgment here and let your creative juices flow as you picture the TikTok you could film, the Instagram graphic you can design, etc.

For the furthest reach, you’ll want to try to stretch the content’s information as far as possible, but it’s important to keep in mind that it might not exactly make sense in all places.

Step 3: Map Out Your Repurposing Stream

Once you have a general idea of how you can break down your long-form content piece, you’ll want to actually do the work of mapping out your stream. For example, I might decide that my blog post can trickle into 2-3 social posts for Facebook & Instagram, an email newsletter to subscribers, 5-10 Pins, and an Instagram story.

Step 4: Create Your Repurposed Content

Finally, it’s time to actually create your repurposed content! Use the stream you’ve created as your guide to the different pieces you need to make.

Pro-Tip! – Have templates pre-made and ready to go so you can easily picture how you will “fill-in” the content.

Bonus: Add Your Repurposing Strategy to Your Favorite Task Management Tool

If you’re an uber-organized and type A business owner like me, you probably were already thinking in this direction. You can build out a content repurtposing workflow that can even be re-used as you utilize this strategy sagain and again. My favorite platform for this is Trello, but we also highly recommend Asana and ClickUp.

Now you have the ultimate time (& sanity) saving strategy that can turn one piece of content into 10+ Huzzah!
